Congratulations to Thrive Whanganui for creating the Business Census. One very interesting insight is that over 50% of Māori businesses are stating a social purpose.
And then there’s MBIE’s Long-term briefing paper where a te ao Māori worldview is mentioned 4 times. Not nearly as often as “Growth” with 28 mentions.
After the floods
Many relief funds have collected and contributed substantial amounts to the affected areas. Amongst the entities delivering on the ground are numerous social, community-led and kaupapa-driven enterprises. Targeted relief must be delivered to directly impacted communities and families. Albeit, there is now a shortfall that other regions can step into to continue supply, food as an example. Assuming the data around consumption didn’t change (high cost of living notwithstanding) but now with sure supply shortages, should the regions who are not directly affected be able to step up at this short notice? Maybe. With the right support.
Are we discarding something valuable by not supporting these organisations (who are in the wrong regions…)?
To look beyond the immediacy and urgency and build a resilient overall system is what we at flaxroots are getting our heads around. Join this conversation and get in touch.
Here an interesting map on the global voting age.
SEWF Youth Forum just passed on 28/29 March. Young people inspiring each other. Us boomers need to get out of the way, says this Gen-Xer.
Over on Stuff, SBN’s Rachel Brown lamented how Aotearoa is “still dithering instead of delivering” on climate action. With so many issues that need addressing with climate action; social, impact and kaupapa-driven enterprises are ‘getting’ the big overall vision of a just and equitable Aotearoa.
Across the ditch, the Ballarat Vital Signs project is another interesting data collection project, but without the lens of purpose-driven businesses. What if that lens was applied to all data collection? Alongside meaningful surveys, tying different numbers together, being curious about possible correlation, causation or something needing more investigation.
Until next time, Ngā mihi nui
