If you had a stressful 2022, with all the ongoing and emerging issues of a worldwide pandemic, we hear you. And crisis everywhere, the growth focused economy, deterioration of human interactions, threats to democracy, not to mention climate change and biodiversity loss, equality and equity issues, the list goes on.
Here at flaxroots we are exploring how our network can emerge fully into our mission of Community. Being in and part of, creating, strengthening, enabling, with entrepreneurial spirit, learning from past, considering the future and working in the present. In short: a Te Ao Māori worldview.
It’s exciting to learn about what’s happening in Australia in the Social Enterprise Sector and the projects in full swing. Regen Melbourne has embarked on a collaborative journey of creating a thriving city within planetary boundaries.
Regen Melbourne is a test bed for a different way of funding via research, strategic convener role and ambitious demonstration projects. How can flaxroots Aotearoa unlock funding to create a thriving Aotearoa and enable place-based capability builders? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
Here are a few tips on how to make the next 12 months less stressful (in the grand scheme of things):

Pondering about becoming a registered charity in Aotearoa New Zealand we are faced with the dreaded charitable purpose. The list is hopelessly outdated, and alas no surprise, supporting social enterprise enablers is not listed. Recognition needs to go to place-based social equity creating entities. Deloitte’s paper on the 2022 budget fails to tie Social Equity to creation and support of small businesses with all the positives when aligned to a Te Ao Māori worldview.
And in other Australian news, the government has called for submissions to the federal budget, similar to our Aotearoa New Zealand process.
Social Enterprise Australia is prepping to submit collectively, this coordinator will participate (follow the link to the workshop on the 24th of January here) and create a flaxroots submission within a few days to spare. Flick us an email if you like to help.
Best wishes for a peaceful and purposeful 2023, to set up the years beyond
